Summer has officially arrived, and we’re just about at the halfway mark of 2010.
Over the next couple of months, I’ll be sharing my secrets to building a six-figure business using my SIMPLE Profit System as the engine. It’s all part of the lead up to the second School for Information Marketing Profits – Live Event, in Baltimore September 24-26.

While I was still teaching history in the high school classroom, I started trying to make extra money so I could quit being broke all the time! It was really tough going, and I struggled for quite a while.
I tried a lot of different things, but none of them really felt right. I tried selling dental plans, and then dietary cleansing products. I started up a pixel website (selling little blocks of advertising). There was the audio bookstore, and then the regular book store. I even opened up an online beef jerky store!
Before too long, I was way more in debt than where I started – and the whole point was increasing income not blowing a bigger hole in my wallet!
That’s when I started figuring out that for me to really succeed in a business, I had to do something different.
Over the next couple of years, I zig-zagged my way towards what is now a very successful, highly leveraged, and semi-automated business.
Eventually, I discovered that my business would only succeed if it featured 6 essential characteristics:
Let me explain a bit more about each of those characteristics.
My early businesses failed because I failed to be SPECIALIZED. I was all over the map! Even my teacher friends asked me, “What are you selling this week, Bob?” Without a clear direction, I couldn’t build up trust in the market place. And because I wasn’t focused on one thing, I never practiced the patience I needed to see things through to profit!
Next, my early attempts failed because I wasn’t basing my business on my own INTELLIGENCE. I was looking for that next hot thing, instead of turning what I already knew into a business that actually helps people. Once I started marketing my own brain power and expertise, I saw much better results. This is the power of information marketing, and I’m so passionate about helping people now discover how to do the same.
The next characteristic is really key: your business has to be MONETIZED or else you can’t last! If people aren’t willing to buy what you’re selling, always expecting it to be free, then you won’t be able to survive your first year in business. Plus, I discovered that it was important to have multiple products that could generate revenue so if any single one of them slumped, my business wouldn’t collapse.
Having a business that’s PORTABLE also became important. As a full time teacher, I often worked long hours grading papers, planning lessons, attending seemingly endless meetings, etc. However one thing was always true: wherever I was – at school, home, my parents place, or traveling, if I had a computer, I could do this business. Since understanding this principle, I’ve been able to “work” on cruise ships, in foreign countries, around the United States, and even at the neighborhood coffee shop.
The biggest time problem with teachers is probably that we feel like we have to do everything ourselves – the grading, conferences, even standing at the copier. So it was important to me that my business was built on LEVERAGE. If I could create something once and have it work for me automatically that would be great. And if I could get other people’s help in promoting my business or helping me create products that’s even better.
Like you, I receive endless emails on a daily basis that promise a 4 hour work week, auto-pilot income, set and forget profit machines – you name it. And while in theory those sound great, they really seem kind of boring to me. Don’t get me wrong – I love vacations as much as you do (I spent about 13 weeks on vacation in 2009) – but like you I also enjoy working hard and helping people. So it’s important to me that my business is fun to do. And I’ve found that the more EXPERIENTIAL I make my business for my customers, the more they enjoy what I do for them.
So now that you understand a bit more of where I’m coming from, let me share the three stages a SIMPLE business should go through, and then I’ll get to that special summer offer I promised you.
Let’s dive into why this works so well…
Most people just start trying to sell stuff that they don’t really know people will buy. They spend a lot of time and energy creating products only to fail to complete them, or take so long that people don’t want them a year from now.
So I teach you should start with Phase 1, the connect/promote phase. This is where you connect people to solutions they are looking for. Specifically, you help them find answers and ways to fix their most pressing challenges. Because you do this in areas where you already have expertise and credibility, you’re more likely to get success early.
And because I teach how to connect people to existing solutions instead of creating your own from scratch, you don’t have to spend the time and energy creating those products.
Now after a short time, your efforts in Phase 1 will reveal what people will buy and what they won’t. It will also expose what’s working in the marketplace, and where the big (or narrow) gaps are.
In Phase 2, you create/produce the products and services that fill those gaps. Using the strategies of Phase 1, you already connect with an audience that knows you and is willing to buy – and your momentum can kick into a higher gear.
This takes you to Phase 3, where you collaborate/partner with others. Having gained some name recognition in your field, and promoted other product creators during Phase 1, you can now leverage the efforts of partners. Your customers and joint venture partners can help you spread the word about your products and services in return for commissions.
No longer will you rely totally on your own efforts, but instead can benefit exponentially from a super-charged affiliate program.
Honestly, the first time I put these 3 phases into action, it took me about 2 months. But I didn’t realize what I had in front of me. It took me another 2 years to perfect this system, and turn into the proven profit machine that it is today.
Which means you can learn it much faster instead of relying on your own trial and error.
But there’s one specific way of marketing a SIMPLE business that I’ve found over and over again to be the best way for my own business.
And that’s the use of teleseminars.
