  1. Joe Wilson

    Bob,
I apologize, I had to drop off the call tonight and wasn’t able to ask this question so you may have went over this one…

I’m going to be building much on my membership area on my live site and want to make sure I hide the new structure that is created for the members area while it’s being built.

I’m going to have to get DAP installed first, prior to creating any of the new place-holder pages and posts. My question is, whats the best way to do this without these pages becoming visible my live traffic?

    Thanks in advance
    Joe

    • I didn’t cover that yet, Joe – but with each post and page, you can set them to private. In the publish box to the top right of a post or page, you can edit visibility, and set from public/published to private.

Then when you’re ready for DAP to take over, you can publish them all and have DAP protect them. They still may show in the menu, depending on your theme, but there will be a lock on the page when they see it.

In some themes, you can also “exclude” pages, which is also a solution to this.

      Bob

      • Joe Wilson

Ahhh — gotcha – yup that will work. Fantastic… Thanks!

    Hey Bob,

Really liking the possibilities with DAP… I second the motion on pdf of the lesson slides.
Also what are the chances of a set up mindmap similar to what you did for Butterfly Script? I started creating one for DAP for the changes I need to make on my site and the “lazy” side of me said “ask Bob.” I’ll continue putting mine together regardless but others may benefit from your maps.

    Ann

    • Marian Sparks

      Ann,

I had similar idea….thinking it would be great to have checklist / mindmap. I haven’t gotten around to doing my own yet. Perhaps, Bob is open to you sharing yours (and/or others who want to share) with a link back to your site.

      Cheers :)
      Marian

      • ann

        Hi Marian

Not sure if mine would be helpful. I already have my site up and started using the Butterfly Script to create a member area.

I’m going through my current mindmap for my site and making the revisions to that map to include the DAP and site changes.

I’ll be happy to cut and paste the parts of my map that would benefit DAP users and start a new mindmap and perhaps we could make it a group effort to make a DAP mindmap.

        To Your Success
        Ann
PS how do you get your pics to show up in comments?

        • Ann,
To get your picture to appear in the comments (and for comments on other blogs when you post), you need to set up a Globally Recognized Avatar. To do that, simply set up a free account at Gravatar.com with your email and avatar. When you fill out the comment form, the email associated with the Avatar is what will appear.

          ~Marian

          • ann

that explains why mine isn’t showing up..
my Gravatar is at a different email address…

            Thx

        • I’ll be giving you the DiscoverDAP mindmap, as promised, during Module 4 or 5.

  3. **Community Service Announcement**

I submitted a ticket to DAP yesterday about problems installing 3.7 on HostGator account. Apparently a file got corrupted which has now been fixed.

So if you still need to install DAP, “Just re-download DAP beta v3.7 (only the DAP.zip file) from the site and try again. It should work this time.”

And of course you need to have LiveLink 1.2.

will we be able to access these videos after the course is over?

  5. Bob,

I was unable to be on the live call for Module 2, but listened to it the following day. Great information but it took me a very long time to get through the whole recording and take notes, before starting to set up my site system pages and posts. It was a bit much to try and absorb all of that info in one session.

My recomendation for future sessions would be to split Module 2 into two separate shorter/smaller sessions, one for the pre-work of setting up the system structure, and the second for installing DAP.

Thank you for re-recording the DAP installation video and uploading it here. I will be working on installing DAP on my site tomorrow morning so that I will be ready for our live training call for Module 3 tomorrow afternoon.

Looking forward to getting the whole system set up and active within the next few weeks!

    Sheri

    • Hi Sheri,
      Thanks for the comments.

Module 2 had plenty of training in it, for sure. This is in part why I did it in Module 2 when there was more time before Module 3 starts up. For those that can do it faster, I want to give them the opportunity to do so. For those that need more time, the replay segmentation allows you to go at the speed you need. You certainly don’t need to listen to the whole thing through in one sitting before you start implementing the action steps that are shown.

Also, you’ll notice that Module 3 will repeat the main parts of creating the posts and pages so that it makes more sense.

      See you in class!

  6. Brad Reed

    Hey Bob,

I’ve really found PDF’s to be useful to keep me on track with the details of the live training. I don’t know if you’ve seen what Ed Dale did with the ’09 30 Day Challenge but his PDF’s really set the bar for being a great model of how to turn a live presentation into a PDF. Not only are the significant screen shots captured, but it is a full transcript as well. (An example can be found at http://media.thirtydaychallenge.com.s3.amazonaws.com/training09/2009TDC01c_Finding_A_Niche.pdf)

While I’d love to have something like that, I’d also be very happy to have a PDF copy of your PowerPoint slides as a minimum starting point for integration with my own notes. A DOC would actually make that easier as well.

I haven’t seen your Butterfly Mind Map that others are mentioning, but I do find Mind Maps to be very useful as well.

And while we’re talking about a wish list, a transcript would be awesome to be able to refer back to in the future when I need to install DAP some other time.

Thanks, and I’ll “see” you on Monday’s class.

    Brad

    • Thanks for the comments Brad. I’ll consider adding transcripts to the course. I need to see more demand for them than I have so far.

I’m going to be giving the mindmap of the process during Module 4 or 5, after you’ve seen the process played out. If I give it to you too early, you’ll have too much of the process before it’s been explained. If I gave you a partial map, and then replaced it later, you’d have too many incomplete maps.

This may seem odd to you, but there’s an instructional method to the process that will better ensure you’re learning it and taking action on it during the course.

    Hey Bob,

When I watched live on Wednesday, I think I missed catching the purpose of that long list of URLs under “Update Services” posted above. What do they do and why do we want to include them? How and why did you choose those particular URLs?

    Thanks!
    Brad

    • The URLs are update services. When you update your blog, it sends out a notice to those services that there is new content. For your posts that are going to be protected, it’s not a big deal. But for posts and pages that will be visible to the public, it provides more opportunities for traffic and back links to your site.

  8. Oscar Toft

    Hi Bob,

    Two questions;

    1. If you turn off the date in WordPress to have undated membership posts, is there any other way to date your eventual non-membership posts than to put the date as text in the body of the post?

    2. I have a WordPress blog already set up in the main directory of a .com-site with my name. I’ve planned on using that blog for more general IM related posts, for sales pages and for posts and pages with recommendations. The blog is empty and doesn’t look any good so far, but
might, as time goes by, get a rather complex structure.

I also own the .net, .org, .info and .biz domains for my name. Do you think it will be the better choice for me to set up a new blog and DAP on my .net or .org domain, and leave my .com blog for it’s original purpose? If so, would you have used the .net or the .org domain?

Hope you have time to give feedback on these questions by the start of your business day today. We’re 6 hours ahead here in Norway, so that might give me the chance to get my homework done in the best possible way before the webinar starts at 10 pm my local time.

    Thank you in advance!

    Oscar

    • Hi Oscar,
      1) You can manually insert the dates for the post, which would be easiest; or you could set up a separate template within your theme that has the dates shown, while other templates within the theme would not show the dates. This would obviously require more customization.

      2) You want to put DAP where it makes the most sense for your customers to get access to the members area. The simpler you can keep it, the better. If you have different systems on .org, .net, etc., then it may get confusing for people who buy something on .org and they think it’s at .com and get lost. Depending on how many products and memberships you plan on having, and how closely related they’ll be will determine which way to go. I know at IMSuccessLibrary it’s currently over complex but can be streamlined – but all the products/memberships relate to internet marketing training from me. But on individual sites like DiscoverDAP, there are just 2-3 choices of products/memberships and that will keep it simple.

From a take action, revise later perspective, I’d go with the blog you’ll have the most passion with keeping up, and keep it simple for both you and for your customers.

      • Oscar Toft

Thank you for the thorough answers Bob!

I think I’ll decide for keeping everything at the .com blog for now. I’ve already started to think of that one as my place on the net, even before it’s ready for prime time.

  9. Oscar Toft

    Hi Bob,

    Additional question;

After your rerecording of the video I see that the number of audio files has also gone down from 12 to 11.

For us that had already dowloaded the 12 files; Which ones are the same and which ones should be redownloaded?

    Oscar

    • I removed the first file from the replay. This was the pre-call greetings and conversation, and isn’t really part of the training.

  10. Brad Reed

    Hey Bob,
I can’t see the Audio Replays on this page.
In viewing the source, I see you used an iframe.
When I open the iframe source in a new tab all by itself, it displays properly so the link is correct.

Thanks in advance for fixing it!
    Brad

    • Brad Reed

Wow! That was fast! You got it fixed as I was writing my comment! Thanks!

  11. Gail

    Hello Everyone,

My name is not Gail that is my mother in-law, my name is Scott and I’m at the tail end of launching my wife’s membership site. Everything is ready to go accept DAP. I look forward to hearing everyone’s success!

I wanted to know if any of you have downloaded the DAP v3.7 Beta? If so have you had any problems?

I haven’t installed any thing yet but I feel inclined to install DAP v3.7 Beta, the reason being is that I’m OCD about keeping current with the latest versions regardless if it’s stable or not.

    Warm regards,

    Scott

  12. Bob,
I could not get a result inside wp-admin Plugin’s search results for Comment relish, so I googled it and stumbled upon this post:

3 reasons why comment relish is not good for your blog:

    http://www.siteguide.us/2007/07/05/3-reasons-why-comment-relish-is-not-good-for-your-blog/

Since you recommended the installation of this plugin , I am now confused as to the benefit of same.

Would maybe YATCP ( Yet Another Threaded Comment Plugin) plugin be better?

“Using standard WordPress your comments are linear, despite the fact that WordPress provides the technical ability to thread comments. That way longer discussion Threads tend to get confusing, as the reader has to keep track who is responding to whom. YATCP (Yet another threaded comments plugin) tries to solve that problem by leveraging the possibilities provided by WordPress.
There are already so… By Joachim Praetorius (yatcp@organisiert.net).”

    Thanks for your guiding lights!

    Janice

  13. Hi Bob
I’m finding this course really helpful. Just a quick question please:
I’ve also reviewed the DAP tutorials in Optimise Press and they seem to be saying that the content for the modules should be delivered on pages not posts. I think if I’m understanding you correctly that you’re saying to deliver on content posts.

What is the best way to set up an online course with modules – am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for any tips on this

    • Bob The Teacher

Hi Rachel – the posts are great if something is being revealed in chapters and the order is important, AND if you are not blogging on the same site.

In most cases the pages work out better because you can organize them in the menus much more efficiently. The IMSL has all the modules in pages.
