Eavesdrop On A Beginner’s Journey Through
The First Stages Of Building An Online Business

And discover strategies, tips, and technical know-how that will help you in yours

You may have seen my post about a shift in mindset in my business at Ask Bob The Teacher. In that post, I mentioned how cool it is that my brother Jim is joining the internet marketing arena.

I’m going to be showing him the ropes through the 3 phases of my SIMPLE formula – the same formula I’m teaching in depth at the event at the end of February. We thought it might be fun to open up our next coaching session to a limited number of people who could benefit from hearing the strategies I’m giving him to work on during this start up phase of his business.

We’ve already completed the 3 sessions, so you can get instant access to the first 2 now, and the third will be posted within 24 hours.

During Session 1…

  • Lay the groundwork for following the SIMPLE 3-phase profit formula
  • Set up website settings in cPanel, including email accounts and redirects
  • Set up a Clickbank account in order to promote affiliate products
  • Introduction to the website File Manager
  • Set up a WordPress blog within your own website
  • Select an affiliate product to promote as part of Phase 1 of SIMPLE
  • And a few little tidbits thrown in along the way.

During Session 2…

  • Recap Session 1 and check in with Jim’s progress since the first session
  • Modify WordPress settings for better Search Engine Optimization and user experience
  • Modify the blog theme to make it more attractive
  • Add a basic blog widget to pull in content from another source (RSS feed)
  • Additional SEO strategies and keyword research
  • Strategies for better affiliate marketing results through the blog
  • Add images to blog posts
  • And even more tidbits thrown in along the way

During Session 3…

  • Answering questions lingering from the last Session
  • Checking in on his completion of Session 2 homework
  • Setting up an Aweber account
  • Creating his first email list
  • Setting up a working opt-in box on the blog
  • Writing the first 3 autoresponder messages
  • And answering questions from the audience along the way.

This is a blend of tactical how to, and strategic “why-to”.

Hello Bob.
I voted for spending $50. for your training, so I’m considering spending the $47. Two questions regarding this training: First, connecting your brother to an appropriate affiliate product. Does that mean how to find and analyze the best affiliate product for his particular niche? Second, concerning laying out the path for his site. What will that be covering?
Thanks for ALL your excellent teaching.
O.

Hi Orvel,
As with most live coaching sessions, the exact steps we’ll cover may be a bit different than what I plan for; but knowing where he is and what his next steps are going into this session, we will talk about how to find the right kind of product, and we’ll actually pick one to start with. The path for his site will be based first on getting WordPress set up so he can edit his own site more easily, and a roadmap for list building and getting his first product up for sale. We won’t get to do all of that, but we’ll lay out the path for it and do as much as we can during the 60-90 minutes.

I must have misunderstood. It wasn’t clear that one has to pay to hear the session replay. Did one also have to pay to listen to the original?

Hi Nancy – yes, the fishbowl coaching live sessions are not free. This first session had 2 options – $20 to attend live, and $47 to get the recording (and the live ticket was free). After the session was finished and the replay uploaded, the offer improved even more to $47 for the recording of the first session, and the next 2 sessions (and replays) are free.

Sorry for the confusion!

Hi Bob,

Hi Bob! Will you be coaching your brother to build his business with the end goal of creating his own products to sell in this same niche? Or is this strictly – how to sell affiliate products? I know you advise affiliate marketing as a first step; I’m just resistant because I want my list to ultimately buy what I have to offer since that’s the only way to really have a sustainable business (have your own products). Will you also discuss how to build your own list with affiliate marketing with your own squeeze page and how to avoid sending everyone to the affiliate opt-in – in which case you’re just building their list for them and getting a small commission, but missing out on the most impt factor – a list of your own….?

Hi Vonalda – yes, absolutely. The process is 1) promote a relevant affiliate product; 2) create a product or service that fills the gaps you discover in phase 1; and 3) set up an affiliate program to continue viral growth.

During these first 3 calls, we’re focusing on Phase 1. In March, we’ll be able to work in Phase 2.

The next 2 calls will include list building and content creation to promote the affiliate products while establishing a reputation as a resource worth listening to.

Hope that helps!
Bob

I’m a tad confused.
you have what would seem to be a pretty longtail keyword, (restaurant manager), however your looking for an affiliate product. Will it be a restaurant mgmt product or a widget? And if so why the specific URL?

Reply

8 Bob The Teacher February 10, 2010 at 11:28 am

Hi Tom – eventually, RestaurantManagerSecrets.com will be the home of one of Jim’s own products. But before and after he has a product, we’re connecting him to affiliate products so he can leverage the efforts and credibility of other people.

It will go through all 3 phases of the SIMPLE formula, and on the other side, he’ll have his own affiliate program promoting his product, which also promotes compatible programs or tools for his audience.

Hi Bob, Thanks for your response! I love the “fishbowl” concept you’re doing. Real life + real time = real business. (You can use that if you want!. :-) )

For someone like me who has done a ton of research already in my proposed niche and can’t find anything that I could promote with integrity because they are, honestly, well, umm, bad, for the most part. (which is why my USP will stand out, I hope). I really think I’m stuck with creating my own product asap. I know you need to “test the concept” before you spend time building your business around it, but if you get a good conversion on your opt-in page for a giveaway, that in itself is some indication that people want what you have, right?

I am assuming I can apply what you are teaching in this series to moving forward with my own product? If not, let me know.

Thanks, Bob! – Vonalda

Hey Vonalda – there’s always something you can promote as an affiliate, even if it’s a simple tool that you use as part of what your knowledge is centered around.

Yes, getting people to opt-in for a giveaway is great. The point is to monetize that process so you can see not only what people want for free, but also what they’re willing to buy.

You can jump into creating your own product as soon as you want, but this way you have more info and revenue to make a better product.

Hi Bob,

I need u to clear up some confusion for me on the fishbowl sesssions purchase. Does the $47 include all 3 sessions, live and recorded? Also, assuming there will be further sessions, is that going to be an extra cost or included in the $47?

Thanks much.
Pam

Hi Pam,
The $47 includes Sessions 1-3. Session 1 replay is available immediately. Session 2 is later today, and Session 3 will be next week. You get live access and the replays of both.
If we do sessions beyond that there will be a new registration, or we may offer a monthly access pass if it’s working well for everybody.

Really enjoyed the webinar today. What a great way to teach by doing with a real world example. Love your brother Jim’s enthusiasm too. I would consider myself intermediate to advanced when setting up blogs and I definitely learned a few things while listening in.
Well worth the $47.

Awesome Content!! This was great. I learned a lot and would love to see you do more fishbowl case studies. Ironically just set up my own Aweber account and the content in this class just saved me a lot of time.

Thank you so much Bob and Jim.
I learned a lot tonight even though I am very knowledgeable about Aweber and Web sites.
I am delighted I was able to join tonight and have 3 pages of notes.
I think you should continue with this teaching style in the future.
I like video training the best and watching you help Jim set things up is a wonderful way to learn.

Bob, what an OUTSTANDING webinar. You have definitely earned the moniker of ‘Bob the Teacher’ as your training style is clear, concise, andeasy to follow. I always learn so much from your training, as you are able to expertly convey the subject matter in a straight forward manner, almost like you were sitting right next to me. I would be interested in following-along in your training and teachings to your brother. His web site will age and mature with age, just like a fine wine.
Thanks for ALL you teachings.

Tonight was excellent! I would love to have you continue doing the fish bowl training. What I loved about it is the fact you showed and explained in great detail how to set up a list with Aweber. I have several Aweber lists already and I didn’t know several things you shared with Jim! Every time I hear you I am always impressed on how well you can share the details of doing things!

Hi Bob,
I really enjoyed session three last night. It helps that Jim sometimes needs help to find tabs and such, and you give a few extra hints: I’d be the same. I’ve realized that it would take months to figure out the things you explain in minutes.

Question about the replays–are they both audio and the video?
thanks

Thanks to both of you for a great webinar. Even though I have an aweber acccount and am somewhat familiar, I learned alot! And congrats to you Jim, you really seem to be picking things up quickly and accomplishing alot along the way.

I love this style of teaching. It really matches up with the way I learn, and I find that by hearing and seeing what you are doing, I feel much more confident that I have a good grasp on the topic.

See u round the internets –
AM

I hope you’ll do more of these “fishbowl” sessions — I’ll definately be one of the first ones to “dive in”!

Hey Bob and Jim,

Fantastic session with aweber the other night. Undoubtly great info and something I know people including me have been looking for – a step by step demo of how to get started. Bob – you definitely show way more detail and tidbits than others. Teachers know how to do it best!

Thanks, Christine
